Explainer animation for SaaS with dashboard and technology charts

Tech and SaaS products face a challenge few other sectors encounter: users need to understand the product’s value before they can try it. Unlike a physical item you can see and touch, software needs to be explained — and that is where explainer videos become the most effective communication tool.

After producing over 30 videos for tech companies in Brazil and abroad, I have mapped what works and what does not in communicating digital products through video.

The scale of the challenge

Customer acquisition cost in the tech sector is among the highest in any market. Consolidated data from different industry surveys indicates that CAC for B2B SaaS companies varies significantly by segment — from a few hundred to thousands of dollars per customer, depending on average ticket size and target market. In any of these scenarios, every visit that does not convert into a lead or trial is money lost.

This is where explainer videos change the game. Product pages with video can increase conversion rates by up to 80%, according to consolidated industry data widely cited by platforms such as Wyzowl and Unbounce.[1] For a SaaS spending hundreds of dollars per lead, increasing conversion by 10 or 20 percentage points is not a marginal improvement — it is a structural change in acquisition cost.

What works for technology

Tech products have an advantage over more traditional sectors: they are naturally visual. A dashboard, a data flow, an integration between systems — all of this can be shown in animation with a clarity that text could never achieve.

The structure that works for SaaS follows a different logic from physical products:

The problem before the product (10s). Tech viewers are naturally skeptical — they have seen thousands of solutions promising revolution. Instead of starting with your product, start with the specific pain it solves. “Your team still wastes hours manually consolidating data?” works better than “Meet the X integration platform”.

The solution in action (25s). Show the software working. Not a slide presentation — an animated demonstration of the real flow. The user logging in, clicking, seeing the result. Wyzowl reports that 96% of people have watched an explainer video to better understand a product or service, and 85% were convinced to buy after watching.[2] In tech, where the product is intangible, this effect is even more pronounced.

The concrete result (15s). Numbers that matter to B2B decision-makers: cost reduction, productivity increase, ROI. Vidyard data shows that videos under one minute achieve around 65% completion rates.[3] That is enough time to deliver the message if every second is planned.

Social proof and credibility (5s). Clients served, awards, time in market. For the B2B buyer, provider credibility weighs as much as product quality.

Direct CTA (5s). “Request a demo”, “Start your free trial”. Clear action, no hesitation.

Formats that work for technology

Each type of tech product calls for a different video format:

2D explainer for apps and platforms. Ideal for demonstrating user flows, integrations and features. 2D animation visualizes abstract concepts — data traveling, systems communicating — without relying on screen recordings that age quickly as the product changes.

Motion graphics for dashboards and data. Excellent for presenting metrics, results and comparisons. Motion turns numbers into stories.

3D animation for hardware and IoT. Connected physical products, devices and tech equipment benefit from the realism of 3D animation to demonstrate functionality without a finished prototype.

With over 30 videos produced for tech companies in my portfolio — including SaaS platforms, mobile apps, AI solutions and enterprise systems — I can say the key is not the tool, but the message structure. Software changes fast; the story that explains its value does not.

Why free software production matters

Producing explainer videos for technology with free software means your entire budget goes into animation hours, script and direction — not into tool licenses that cost thousands of dollars per year. With Blender, Krita, Inkscape and Kdenlive, I deliver market-grade quality without passing licensing costs to the client.

If you are structuring your product’s explainer video, use the Briefing Generator I created — guided questions that avoid the most common mistakes. And to estimate the budget, there is the Budget Calculator.
