An explainer animation is a short video, typically 60 to 120 seconds, that explains a product, service or concept clearly and engagingly. Combining 2D animation, motion graphics and voiceover, it transforms complex ideas into messages anyone can understand in under two minutes.
For businesses, explainer animation isn’t just marketing content — it’s a conversion tool.
Why explainer animation works
The numbers are consistent across different industry surveys. In the State of Video Marketing 2026 report by Wyzowl, 96% of people reported having watched an explainer video to better understand a product or service, and 85% said they were convinced to buy something after watching a video.[1] The State of Marketing 2026 report by HubSpot — surveying 1,505 marketing professionals across North America, Europe, Asia and Australia — found a similar pattern: short-form video was cited as the format with the best ROI, more than doubling the preference recorded the previous year.[2]
The impact shows directly in conversion rates. Pages with explainer videos can increase conversions compared to pages without video, and the most cited case in the industry is Dropbox: in its early years, a single animated video on the homepage explained the then-new concept of cloud storage — and the user base jumped from 5,000 to 75,000 practically overnight, without a complex marketing strategy behind it.[3]
Real-world corporate video data confirms this engagement pattern. Wistia, analyzing over 13 million videos and 79 million hours of viewing for its State of Video 2026 report, found that short videos sustain much higher engagement rates than long content.[4] Vidyard, in an analysis of over 940,000 videos used by sales teams, recorded completion rates of about 65% for videos under one minute — compared to just 20% for videos over twenty minutes.[5] That is exactly the duration range of an explainer animation.
The reason is simple: an explainer animation condenses what a text page would take minutes to communicate into seconds of visual and audio content. The viewer understands the product’s value before reading the first line.
Types of explainer animation
2D explainer. The most common format. Ideal for SaaS, apps, digital platforms and products that need visual demonstration. More affordable cost and faster production.
3D explainer. Recommended for physical products, equipment demonstrations, engineering and architecture. Higher cost, but unmatched level of detail and realism.
Motion graphics explainer. Focused on charts, data and abstract concepts. Excellent for corporate presentations, pitch decks and social media content.
Whiteboard animation. Hand-drawing style. Effective for educational and institutional content, generally at a lower cost.
How much does an explainer animation cost
The cost of an explainer animation for business varies depending on duration, style, script complexity and number of revisions. A 60-second 2D animation can cost between $600 and $2,400, while a 3D animation for the same duration can reach $5,000 or more.
These figures are not unique to any single market. In a survey of 242 explainer animation studios around the world, Wyzowl found an average price of $8,457 for a 60-second video, with a much lower median — around $5,400 — pulled by a small number of very high budgets.[6] The variation between studios was enormous: the lowest quote recorded was $600, and the highest reached $250,000 for the same video format.[6] This confirms what market experience already shows: price alone says little about quality — what matters is understanding what is included in each quote before comparing proposals.
The good news is that, unlike paid ads, the investment in explainer animation has long-term returns — the video keeps generating value as long as it is live. Both Wyzowl and HubSpot report this effect in their latest surveys: most marketers say video directly increased sales and helped generate leads, and HubSpot specifically points to short-form video as the format with the highest perceived ROI in 2026.[1][2]
