Animation Direction

Creative and technical direction for 2D, 3D and motion design animation projects

Animation direction is the creative and technical role responsible for overseeing all aspects of animated production — from visual concept and storyboard to final frame execution. The animation director defines the artistic style, coordinates the team and ensures visual consistency.

I currently direct animation at Surto Coletivo Filmes, working from conception to project completion. My approach combines artistic vision with production management, ensuring each project delivers maximum quality within deadline and budget.

What it isProfessional animation direction

The global animation market was valued at over US$ 400 billion, driven by streaming, gaming, advertising and education. In Brazil, the sector grows with FSA incentives and incentive laws, with animated series generating demand for qualified directors. Animation direction covers:

  • Pre-production: concept art, style guides, model sheets and color scripts
  • Storyboard and animatic: scene-by-scene visual planning with timing
  • Production supervision: keyframe review, layout correction and continuity
  • Art direction: definition and consistency of the project's visual style
  • Post-production: finalization, compositing, color correction and credits

ProcessHow the project works

1

Creative briefing

Script reading, alignment with the general director and definition of the artistic vision. Development of initial concept art, style guides and visual references for art direction.

2

Art direction

Creation of character model sheets, color scripts, environments and definition of the visual style. Development of reference materials for animation team consistency.

3

Production supervision

Keyframe review, layout correction, scene approval and visual continuity assurance. Schedule monitoring and alignment with the animation team.

4

Finishing

Final color review, compositing and credits. Master delivery in required formats (broadcast, streaming, cinema). Post-production report and lessons learned.

FAQFrequently asked questions

What's the difference between an animation director and an animator?

The animator executes the frames, creating movement frame by frame. The animation director defines the visual style, coordinates the animation team, reviews the work and ensures consistency. It's a creative and technical leadership role, not direct execution.

Do you work with any animation style?

Yes. I have experience in traditional 2D animation, digital animation (frame by frame), 2D rigging, motion graphics and 3D animation. The style is defined in the creative briefing according to the narrative and aesthetic needs of the project.

How long does it take to direct an animated short film?

A 5-10 minute short takes 3 to 6 months, depending on visual complexity, team size and chosen animation technique. Simpler projects or larger teams can have reduced timelines.

Do you work with international studios?

Yes. I serve studios and production companies from Brazil and abroad. For international projects, I work with English communication and deliver masters in the formats required by the client, respecting broadcast and streaming standards.

Do I need to have a script and storyboard ready to hire?

Not necessarily. I can work from the conception stage, helping to develop script, storyboard and art direction. The earlier I enter the project, the more I can contribute to visual consistency and production feasibility.
